Function of Ceramic Matrix Composite Interface

The effect of debonding deflection cracking.


The interface is the key to the strengthening and toughening of ceramic based composite materials, and its main functions include the following:
① The effect of debonding deflection cracking. When the matrix crack extends to the interface area with moderate bonding degree, this interface dissociates and deflects the crack, thereby adjusting the interface stress and preventing the crack from directly crossing the fiber propagation.
② Transfer the load effect. Due to the fact that fibers are the main load-bearing phase in composite materials, the interfacial phase needs to have sufficient strength to transfer loads to the fibers.
③ Relieve heat mismatch effect. Ceramic based composite materials are prepared at high temperatures. Due to the difference in coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) between fibers and matrix, internal stress is generated when cooled to room temperature. Therefore, the interface zone should have the function of relieving thermal residual stress.
④ Barrier layer function. Under the high temperature experienced in the preparation of composite materials, the elements of fibers and matrix will diffuse, dissolve, and even undergo chemical reactions, resulting in excessive interfacial bonding between fibers and matrix. Therefore, it is required that the interface area should have the function of preventing element diffusion and preventing harmful chemical reactions from occurring.
