When fiber-reinforced ceramic matrix composites are stretched along the fiber direction, the fracture mode of the composite material varies depending on the strength of the fiber/matrix interface bonding. Based on this, it can be divided into three types:
① Strong bonding interface - brittle fracture. When the external load increases, the matrix cracks propagate to the interface. Due to the strong interface bonding, the cracks cannot deflect at the interface and directly cross the fibers, causing the composite material to fracture. However, for particle reinforced ceramic matrix composites, a strong bonding interface is a necessary condition for strengthening and toughening.
② Weak bonding interface - ductile fracture. When the matrix crack extends to the interface, due to the weak interface bonding, the crack can deflect at the interface, thereby achieving interface dissociation, fiber bridging, and fiber pull-out between fibers and matrix.
③ Strong weak mixed interface - mixed fracture. Mixed fracture is a mixture of the two ideal fracture modes mentioned above, where brittle fracture occurs at the interface with strong bonding and ductile fracture occurs at the interface with weak bonding.
